Defining the word ‘gothic’ is not an easy task. In the old-age literature, it has been used for ‘barbaric’. Historically, Goth is thought to be a culture of the pre-medieval era. But, today it has become a subculture, which reflects the negative effects of industrialization and capitalism. This reflection can be seen today in the gothic clothing.

Some novels of this trend came in the limelight in the Victorian era, which perfectly represent this trend. This subculture believes in the existence of some supernatural things which are inexistent in reality. The presence of vampires and the tremendous capabilities of science and technology can be witnessed in its literature. The popular fictional vampire Dracula also belongs to this trend.

It will be significant to mention that some other novels, which are termed as ‘steampunk’ today, were also written in the same era. So, these two cultures influenced each other in various aspects. The punk culture also believes in the supernatural things and futuristic technology, but still it is different from Goth. This culture is fascinated through science and technology and is based on the positive traits. It is basically based on the adventurous aspects.

But, gothic is contrary to the punk in this respect, and it attracted the attention of various people in 1980s. It became a subculture followed by a number of people of several cultures. The people who are following this subculture wear the dark-colored clothing. Besides, the females use the black nail polish and lipstick. Some of the people also blacken their hair. Some other accessories are also kept by these people such as artificial skulls, goblets, vampires and dragons etc. As a matter of the surprise, the gothic shirts, corsets, skirts and other dresses have become the fashion trend among the non-gothic people also and are worn in a number of themed events.

In addition, this trend could be witnessed in the entertainment media also. Some films and TV programs have been made on this trend. The famous character such as Lady Sybilla came in the limelight in the entertainment media. These films and programs are also playing a prominent role in the growth of gothic clothing.

On the other hand, power of the internet has also played a prominent role in enhancing the popularity of this trend. It is the major source through which this culture has been spread among the other people as a fashion trend.

The culture is growing now with the influence of some other trends also. It might have taken the influence from negative aspects, but today it is a part of the fashion industry. So, it is not supposed to be negative by the fashion-freaks of today.
